Last night I helped a Presbyterian church with their spring concert. I was asked originally to be a sub, but then everyone could come, so they put me at the bottom, playing bells they normally don't play. The service was interesting, definitely different from what I'm used to! The first song we played was "The Bells of Wythe" (don't ask me how that's pronounced!).

I can't believe it took me SO long to make this! After I finished, I was like, now what? Surely that isn't IT? But it was. I think it took me about 90 seconds. Of course, I made a tiny little batch, because I don't like coconut, but even this tiny little batch should last us a while.
There are a million recipes on pinterest, with a million different ingredients and amounts. A bunch use vinegar AND baking soda (my husband was NOT impressed with those people's science). Some use just one or the other with another cleaning agent that smells nice (like Purex crystals). And some use hair conditioner, which to me was like, if you're gonna buy store bought stuff, why not just buy store bought softener and avoid all this trouble?! Well, I didn't have another cleaning agent that smells nice, so guess what I paired with my vinegar and water? My husband's hair conditioner. (Mine is a nice, name brand, ie: expensive, and his is dollar tree cheap.) Here's my list of ingredients and directions: Seriously, what is better than free birthday food?! A couple nights before the big day, I went online and signed up for a bunch of coupons for EJ's birthday. We started the day with a free donut--chocolate with sprinkles.
My friend had surgery the other day, so after lunch I took EJ and her two kids to a nearby splash park. There were SO many kids there! But it was fun. EJ is right in the middle, with the pants and 18 on his shirt.
A long-time friend of my family's passed through the area recently and left several large bags of yarn for my mom and me. What do you think? Will I have enough yarn to keep me occupied for a while? :-)
I've been reading missionary biographies lately (that my mom actually got EJ for his birthday) and I have been SO inspired! I get chills reading all the miracles God has done in their lives. These people are still alive--these miracles were done in my lifetime! I want to live in such a way where God can work miracles in my life, too. I know I have to first surrender—the missionaries totally sold out to God, giving Him every minute of every day. Trusting Him when they didn’t know their next step. Trusting Him when they did know their next step and it wasn’t what they would have chosen for themselves. Willing to put themselves out of their comfort zone on a regular basis.
All of this sounds scary. A normal person wouldn’t do those things. A normal person would go to church, be moderately involved, read their Bible, pray three times a day, give their tithe, and die. But a normal person wouldn’t be able to look back on their deathbed and, in recounting all God has done through them, lose track of how many miracles God worked. A normal person wouldn’t know the rush when uncertainty, doubt, and fear collide head-on with peace, joy, and God-given courage. I don’t want to be a normal person. I have glimpsed into the lives of extra-ordinary people, and I want that for myself. God has given us all so much potential, and when I get to Heaven, I don’t want God asking me why I didn’t give my potential to Him. Imagine the lives we could touch; imagine the chaos we could erupt, turning this world upside down just like the disciples of old. Will you be a normal person, or will you join me in becoming a conduit for miracles? One of EJ's friends had a Frozen-themed birthday, complete with ice skating, capes, and even an appearance by a grown-up lady dressed as Elsa. He wanted to go as the future man who would marry Elsa, so I made him a cape with sequins and glitter glue in the shape of snowflakes. (While the mother in me wanted him to wear his helmet for protection, I was glad he incorporated it {in his mind, at least} as part of his future-man outfit.) He said first, he would struggle around the rink a couple times, then he would put on his cape and go flying across the ice, reminiscent of when Elsa went from her normal clothes to ice castle clothes.

Who am I, you ask?
In 2006 I had a stroke, and every day my husband encourages me to use my remaining brain cells to the best of my ability. I love to organize, make crafts, and go on adventures (safe ones). I hope that through my blog posts, you will be encouraged to accept and make the best of challenges God throws at your life. Categories
