Depending on your reasons for homeschooling, you will probably approach this different ways. I have learned that unless it's written in black and white in the Bible (which most things are black and white), I should treat people with a healthy dose of grace and realize that if everyone were the same, a boring planet that would make. So while there is no one right way to homeschool, and other people have found smashing success using other methods, I will tell you what's worked and hasn't worked for me and my one kid. Now I sound like I have a narrow perspective. Which I don't, surprisingly. Just keep reading.
You've noticed that public school is not helping your kid. Or Christian school isn't a whole lot better than the ideals and atmosphere of public school. Or you've always wanted to homeschool, you just have no idea how to start. Then welcome, this post is for you! I will encourage you, challenge you, and guide you. Then I'll send you away, hopefully a little better equipped to do this magnificent thing of personally instilling in your child everything he needs to know to be a highly functioning adult in society. Scared yet? No need, it's not as bad as it sounds. I promise.

The other day I needed to be in Mountain Brook at 5:30, and I was in the area at 3:30, so I decided to spend the two hours at the zoo. Guess who absolutely loved that idea? Yep. That one. It's blurry because he wouldn't stand still! "Hello there, short grass! Hello there, tall grass. You know bamboo is a kind of grass, right? So, short grass, and tall grass!"
A couple months ago, I attended a baby shower for three ladies. I wanted to take something unusual, so I made a diaper cake! It was fun, but so "in the box" as far as diaper cakes go. Last week I had another shower to go to, so I typed in "diaper cake" in the Pinterest search box and scrolled until I found something a little more creative. This is what I found (click the picture to go to her website!) Isn't it absolutely the cutest thing??? Well, I took that idea and did what I could. Here's mine: I realize now that it looks less of a bathtub and more of a laundry basket, and why would you have diapers in a laundry basket (my husband interjected here--why would you have diapers in the bathtub--which, okay, makes sense too), but I couldn't find a nice blanket to wrap everything in plus this basket will be handy. Either way, the girl it was for loved it. (The animal's tail pulls and sings a tune as it winds back up.) Included are:
one package size 3 diapers three small bottles one each: travel size shampoo and body wash three 6-12 month onesies two 6-12 month matching pants one adorable stuffed bear/monkey It was fun, although maybe next time I'll nix the diapers and just have clothes and blankets and etc. tossed in there, so it really does look like a baby playing in the hamper. The thrift store has a lot of nice baby clothes so it shouldn't be too expensive. Last week we went to a one-day conference in Huntsville. It was about getting ideas and excitement to spread pro-life-ness and end the baby killing once and for all. I did get some good ideas (which I will be exploring soon), and we met some people and just had an overall good time. Another family we met, the dad has the same name as my husband, and the son has the same name as my son--first and middle names! The other "EJ" is two years older, but both are homeschooled and were immediate fast friends. They didn't separate the entire evening!
We went to Huntsville and spent the night in a Radisson hotel. I normally book travel stuff, but this time my husband did because he had to book stuff for someone else, also, so he thought it would be easier if he just did it. Never. Again. I told him. I have to be in charge of booking the hotels! Let me tell you why.
Negatives: Every night, we put EJ to bed. He turns his lamp on and reads for a while, then at some point before midnight, I turn his light off, snuggle with him, and he goes to sleep. Most nights, we talk about the day, what we would do differently, what we want to do again. Sometimes we'll tell stories, from memories to wild dragon-and-princess tales.
Tomorrow we are going on a trip. It is two hours, we will stay one night, and then two hours back home. Seriously nothing to get too worked up about. But it inspired tonight's "snuggle talk": I'm going on a trip, and I'm going to pack... |
Who am I, you ask?
In 2006 I had a stroke, and every day my husband encourages me to use my remaining brain cells to the best of my ability. I love to organize, make crafts, and go on adventures (safe ones). I hope that through my blog posts, you will be encouraged to accept and make the best of challenges God throws at your life. Categories
