$1.47 borax
$1.97 washing soda
$3.97 scent booster
------------------------------
$8.38 for 106 loads / $4.41 if you skip the scent booster! Pretty good savings, if I do say so myself!

Here is the recipe I used. I don't remember where I got it, because I searched multiple sites. 2 cups soap (like Fels Naptha or similar), 1 cup washing soda, and 1 cup borax. All three can be found at select Walmarts in the laundry detergent aisle. Use a cheese grater to grate up the soap. I grated up the entire bar and it was 7 cups. So then I poured in 3 1/2 cups of both other ingredients, giving me a total of 14 cups of detergent. I mixed it up with my hands and got this (the pink strip stuff is my grated soap): You need an airtight container, and lots of people use empty cat litter tubs. Even with 14 cups of detergent, it didn't fill my container very full: 2 Tablespoons is 1/8 of a cup, but my Tablespoon measuring cup is in the strawberry powder (for milk), so I just fill up my 1/4 cup halfway. Several sites said they use a ...smell enhancer?... like Purex crystals. When I smelled this Gain stuff, my nose was in heaven! Scent booster...it's written on the bottle. I just sprinkle enough to cover the detergent in my 1/4 cup scoop, and my clothes smell SO GOOD!!! Here's all my stuff, stored for later. There's still washing soda and borax leftover, and since the last time I used my cheese grater for cheese was...um...needless to say, I won't be missing it in the kitchen. It can gather dust here, instead, where it will be handy the next time I need it. Inside the Purex bottle is leftover fabric softener, for when I run out in my Zeal container. My laundry cart. What I use for each load on the top shelf, the trash bag for dryer lint on the second shelf, and my leftovers and stain remover spray on the bottom shelf. The Arm and Hammer detergent on the shelf in the background still has store detergent in it, but it's too hard to use every time. The orange bottle also has store detergent that I gave to my mom. When it's used up, I'll put the rest from the A&M bottle in it. The litter container next to the shelf is the one I ground up the soap in, so I could measure it out and know how much of the other ingredients to add. And of course, a very small sampling of our extensive game collection. I love Boggle. It took some elbow grease (grating up the soap) and a little time, but it was well worth it. $.97 soap

Who am I, you ask?
In 2006 I had a stroke, and every day my husband encourages me to use my remaining brain cells to the best of my ability. I love to organize, make crafts, and go on adventures (safe ones). I hope that through my blog posts, you will be encouraged to accept and make the best of challenges God throws at your life. Categories
