"Mommy, I need to tell you something."
I had no idea what he was about to say, but any time he prefaces his speech with this, it's always insightful.

Last week I asked EJ when he reads his Bible every day. He kind of hemmed and hawwed, so I gave him a possible solution. You see, after he goes to bed, he stays awake for about two hours and reads. Then I go in, turn his light off, we snuggle, and he goes to sleep. So I suggested that he use the first ten minutes or so of those two hours to do his devotions. Wednesday night, he enthusiastically turned to the Proverb of the day and started reading. I went in to check on him about half an hour later and he was asleep. :-) It happens sometimes. Thursday, though, about half an hour into it, he was asleep again. :-/ Okay...But on Friday night, when I went to check on him, he was asleep again. This does NOT happen sometimes. I wondered what was wrong. On Saturday nights, he doesn't stay up to read because he has to get up early for church the next day. So Saturday night, I went to snuggle with him right away. We had only been talking for a minute when he said,

Last week I subbed for 3rd and 4th grade for two days. It went smoothly, and I know EJ had a good time. These fourth graders are the same kids I taught in kindergarten! I had 8 in kindergarten, and now these are the only three left (and EJ makes 4).
The other day I needed to be in Mountain Brook at 5:30, and I was in the area at 3:30, so I decided to spend the two hours at the zoo. Guess who absolutely loved that idea? Yep. That one. It's blurry because he wouldn't stand still! "Hello there, short grass! Hello there, tall grass. You know bamboo is a kind of grass, right? So, short grass, and tall grass!"
Every night, we put EJ to bed. He turns his lamp on and reads for a while, then at some point before midnight, I turn his light off, snuggle with him, and he goes to sleep. Most nights, we talk about the day, what we would do differently, what we want to do again. Sometimes we'll tell stories, from memories to wild dragon-and-princess tales.
Tomorrow we are going on a trip. It is two hours, we will stay one night, and then two hours back home. Seriously nothing to get too worked up about. But it inspired tonight's "snuggle talk": I'm going on a trip, and I'm going to pack... I fixed and finished the picnic blanket from last week (that I still need to write about), and I wanted to use it! So for a very late lunch, we packed up and went to a nearby park by the airport.
Seriously, what is better than free birthday food?! A couple nights before the big day, I went online and signed up for a bunch of coupons for EJ's birthday. We started the day with a free donut--chocolate with sprinkles.
My friend had surgery the other day, so after lunch I took EJ and her two kids to a nearby splash park. There were SO many kids there! But it was fun. EJ is right in the middle, with the pants and 18 on his shirt.
One of EJ's friends had a Frozen-themed birthday, complete with ice skating, capes, and even an appearance by a grown-up lady dressed as Elsa. He wanted to go as the future man who would marry Elsa, so I made him a cape with sequins and glitter glue in the shape of snowflakes. (While the mother in me wanted him to wear his helmet for protection, I was glad he incorporated it {in his mind, at least} as part of his future-man outfit.) He said first, he would struggle around the rink a couple times, then he would put on his cape and go flying across the ice, reminiscent of when Elsa went from her normal clothes to ice castle clothes.
Last week our church's school gave the SATs, so I administered the 4th grade in exchange for EJ taking them with the 3rd graders. Every morning after the devotional, the class did pledges. Since he was visiting all week, the teacher graciously allowed EJ to be in charge of the Christian flag (the kids change jobs every week).

Who am I, you ask?
In 2006 I had a stroke, and every day my husband encourages me to use my remaining brain cells to the best of my ability. I love to organize, make crafts, and go on adventures (safe ones). I hope that through my blog posts, you will be encouraged to accept and make the best of challenges God throws at your life. Categories
