It was a bea-U-tiful day the other day, and I wanted to have a picnic supper at the park. I found my quilt, and I had two little pillows (to sit on on top of my quilt) and a bag of stuffing (to make a third pillow). So I looked through my material to see if I had anything I could use to make a pillowcase. I found this sailboat material. I thought at first it was big like for a curtain, but turns out it was just really long: Yes, REALLY long. (That bag is not trash, just so you know. It has a gigantic roll of fabric with cording on the edge we got for free at a thrift store.) So I laid it out and it wrapped around the pillow nicely, So I drew something like I saw in my head: I knew we would be going to get velcro after supper, so the plan was to make this pillowcase where I could remove the pillow to sew on the velcro later. I figured with there being such a big overlap, it would work fine on our picnic. So I measured the pillow (12 inches) and measured and cut the material (14 inches): I had a long skinny piece of fabric. I folded a third over and pinned and sewed right sides together. I turned it right side out: I ironed it, and ironed the hem for the top part, trying to figure out my next step. I took the pillow out of the packaging and turns out it's more like stuffing than a pillow... I put it in there to see how it fit: So, since it was like stuffing, I decided it needed sewn completely in. You can see in this picture, well, maybe not too well, the stitching isn't exactly in a straight line. The white part is the end of the fabric, and the pillow was so poofy that it was really hard to sew it straight. I should have had the top part overlap less, so I would have more room to sew this shut, but I wasn't planning to sew it shut until I got to this step. The good thing about this is that it is at the fold and you can't see it unless you turn the pillow backwards. Here's the outside: The hem across the top of the flap: And the hem down the sides: I folded it over and hand-stitched it closed (after the picnic): There was no need for velcro, and I had these two sailboat buttons. Nautical pillow completed!

Who am I, you ask?
In 2006 I had a stroke, and every day my husband encourages me to use my remaining brain cells to the best of my ability. I love to organize, make crafts, and go on adventures (safe ones). I hope that through my blog posts, you will be encouraged to accept and make the best of challenges God throws at your life. Categories
