He got right to work, but on the second page, he complained that he didn't like to write. (I hear this almost every day.) Today, I had an answer! I told him about someone I know who doesn't like to write, and he's let it seep so far into his brain that it hurts his company. He thinks, "I don't like to write," so he doesn't write neatly, and then his boss can't read his writing and it takes extra time and energy to make sure things get filed properly.
EJ's eyes went wide, and he sat up straighter, and the rest of the page he used his best handwriting. Well, his "I'm writing neatly but I'm in a hurry too" handwriting. :-)
