(it's really annoying when I play the violin):
Ever since my stroke, the back of my right hand hurts like a thousand tiny needles are being jabbed into my skin whenever my hand gets cold. Normally, you would think, wear gloves. But ever since I was little, the palms of my hands stay perpetually sweaty. Most of the time, they are just bad enough that lotion feels really gross; once in a while it will be so bad that if I were to shake your hand, you would want to wipe your hand off afterward. That's mostly just when I'm nervous, though. So I don't want to wear gloves all the time, because as the back of my hand is cold, my palm is hot. I turned my creative juices on and brainstormed. This is what I came up with last winter: At the time, the only fuzzy yarn I had was this pink. I measured my hand as I went, and I wasn't really sure how to make it stay tight on my wrist. I ended up just doing this: This winter, I pulled it back out. The yarn looks tattered, and it really is annoying having to cinch the yarn around my wrist all the time. My husband suggested I make more in other colors so I would always have one to match my outfit. I am in no wise a fashionista, but the longer I thought about it, the more sense it made to make another one. I could tweak the design a little so it would fit better. I bought iron-on velcro a couple weeks ago; I could use that to fasten the wrist part. I made one with white yarn, because I know you're not supposed to wear white after Labor Day, but white does go with everything: When I ironed the velcro on, it turned my yarn a little less white, which you can't really see in the picture, but in real life, it's noticeable, to me anyway. And I clearly didn't do a good job of measuring before applying the velcro: I also made a black one. I figured, on those rare days when I care if my clothes match, it would be nice to have at least one other option. The problem I didn't fix--the gap beside my hand (it's really annoying when I play the violin): The problem I did fix--the velcro_ I keep the pink one in my purse and the white and black ones in the bathroom drawer, that way no matter where I am, I'll always have a hand warmer handy. Probably next winter, I'll make another one, maybe brown or red. I like the idea of the velcro rather than just winding the end through and having to pull on it all the time. I'll just keep tweaking the design and one of these years I'll have a marketable product!

I think the pattern you used on the new one is great! Don't worry about the whole "white" issue...because it looks like it is made like a sweater it is called "winter white" and is totally acceptable. White can still be stylishly worn in winter as long as it is made of wintery fabric- suede, leather, cable knit, etc. =D

Who am I, you ask?
In 2006 I had a stroke, and every day my husband encourages me to use my remaining brain cells to the best of my ability. I love to organize, make crafts, and go on adventures (safe ones). I hope that through my blog posts, you will be encouraged to accept and make the best of challenges God throws at your life. Categories
