Last fall, there was a huge consignment sale for kids' clothes. I bought several items for EJ including these footy jommies, and when I got home, I was extremely disappointed to find that the zipper was 100% shot. There is no way that mom didn't know the zipper was busted, yet she sneaked it in anyway. I paid several dollars for it, so I wasn't about to just throw it out. I'd never sewn in a zipper before, but I figured, how hard can it really be? First, I cut the teeth of the old zipper off. This is what it looked like: I didn't know how to get the end out, so I just cut it to here... and just slipped the old zipper pull off! (which in and of itself was broken--man, the lady that sold these jommies has NO integrity!) I have a bunch of extra "feet" for my sewing machine, and I know one is a zipper foot, but I wouldn't know which one was the right one if it pinched my finger. So I just grabbed this funny-looking foot and thought it would work just fine. The right side, I could sew under the flap, but the left side, not so much. I had to sew it on top of the flap, but it works. The zipper I bought was shorter than the zipper in the jommies, so I had this big hole I had to sew up. Here's the top of the zipper. The pull thing is there, it's just sticking straight out, perpendicular to the camera. You can see where the old zipper used to be and how I just sewed the new one out in the open. And I had no idea how to properly sew the bottom. I just went back and forth over it, then when I turned it right side out, was so dismayed to see the thread all over. All in all, not too bad for my first time. I honestly don't know that I would do it any different, but I might google a video or two first next time! These jommies are size 8, so EJ will grow into them and this zipper should last through many more rambunctious boys.

Replacing a zipper is a daunting task--you did fine, especially considering no one will see them outside your family!! This works perfectly for something EJ will just wear to bed! LOL
