The other day, we went to the zoo with some friends. I saw the sign about wristbands, which allows you to visit the dino exhibit and ride the train, among other things I knew we wouldn't do. I asked the lady about them, but they cost a lot more than either I or my friend were willing to pay. So we got the general tickets, and when the lady gave me my receipt, she slid 5 armbands to me and said, "Have a blessed day." Well, thank you very much I think I will! So after we ate (seriously, I didn't see the "no outside food" sign until we were walking away) we made a bee line for the dino exhibit. EJ took these pictures:

I talked on the phone for over an hour this morning. I don't normally do that. But today, it happened. EJ likes to be with me, but he knows he has to be quiet when I'm on the phone, so before my conversation got too deep, he obtained permission to cut up some of my cardstock. I had fun watching him work, and it wasn't until he was finished that I realized what he had made.
Here he is making the bottom of the ship. I'm not sure why it's wrinkled, or why it's pointy. The mast of the ship is his shark head grabber toy that he got with some of his tickets from Hoover library. I have to say, this year, I was not AS nervous as I was last year. Probably because I knew he'd done this before, and he had done just fine last year! EJ sang with the 1-6 grade choir to open the service (this is not MY recording--someone had their camera right in front of EJ's face the whole time, so I got her recording!): I have a huge regret regarding this. The kids stood up there for about 5 minutes before church started--the leader wanted to make sure she got everyone in place correctly and all that. EJ and the taller boy next to him were hilarious during those 5 minutes! They made faces at each other and were just generally acting like silly little boys. I loved it (other than the fact that they were standing in front of the entire church!). I found out later that they both like the same girl and they both think they are going to marry her. We'll see how their friendship weathers the teen years! :-) Next, EJ preached. It wasn't an option on the sign up sheet, so I just asked about it and they said he could. It's kinda hard to understand him, but he did an awesome job! I'm so proud of him. (And I didn't know he would pause like that to make sure everyone had time to turn to his passage!)
Today we were going to go to the library to watch a marionette puppet show about good ol' Rumpel. When we got there, the only parking spot available was "carpool only". They had a sign displayed, announcing more parking somewhere else--that turned out to be several blocks down on the OTHER side of a main highway. Um, no thank you! So we went to the park instead.
The library website said that the show will be again this afternoon, but it will be at an elementary school smack in the middle of 3 bad areas. I figure, if people send their little kids to school there, it shouldn't be that bad, right? But hubby says no, and I know he's just looking out for us. :-) Maybe we'll go bowling this afternoon instead. First of all, the flower EJ got from the library was a petunia. The lady at the library kept calling them peonies, but I looked it up on the internet, and they were really petunias. EJ chose a purple one, so for the first week or so at home, his flower looked like this:
Today, all the organizations around our fair city got together and offered free admittance to anyone who was a member of any organization. Since we have a year long pass to the McWane Science Center, we got free admission to all of them! They organized it so that each "activity" overlapped by 15 minutes, so we couldn't go to two in a row. However, it worked out fine because that gave us more time to explore the venue we were at. Just me and EJ today; my poor husband had to work. :-( Our first stop was the Botanical Gardens, where the "Embellishments" played a myriad of songs. They opened with: If you notice, the bells are not arranged from lowest to highest. After they played, I asked the director about this, and she said people don't ask that kind of question if they haven't played before. I told her about going to Nationals several times in high school, and the fact that we have handbells at our church, but our director has completely dropped the ball about that. She asked if I would please audition for them! Of course I said yes! I'm so excited to maybe play handbells again!
My friend told me about Lowe's' Build n Grow program, so I signed EJ up for it. This past Sunday, the kids built the Pizza Planet car from Toy Story. Since it was a building thing, I stayed home to read/nap and Daddy took EJ.
Ya' gotta love the "no pain, no gain" expression! Before another week of library fun commences, I should really catch y'all up on what I didn't tell you about yet. Just two things, really. The first being, boa constrictors.
This summer the theme of the library's reading program is "Dig into reading". Ironically, many of the activities have to do with pirates, and one library had a pirate party. We had to register, and it was for 1-3 graders. Even then, there were way more kids there than I was comfortable with. The line to get name tags wrapped around the hallway and through the children's department. (They had name tags to make sure non-registered kids didn't crash the party.) It moved fairly quickly, and after getting name tags, the kids had to "walk to plank" into the party room. Once in the room we formed another line to get pirate gear--mustache, eye patch, bandana, and hat. EJ took his sword and got lots of oohs and ahhs from the other kids. Then each kid got his picture taken with pirate props:
I love library fun! A different library got out their pets for the kids to look at and touch. Here there were about 25 kids that showed up, all crowding around, trying to get closer than anyone else. I don't remember what animal this is, but it stores water in its tail, kinda like the camel stores fat in its humps. The library lady said that it can lose its tail, but the second one will grow back disfigured and won't store water like it should.

Who am I, you ask?
In 2006 I had a stroke, and every day my husband encourages me to use my remaining brain cells to the best of my ability. I love to organize, make crafts, and go on adventures (safe ones). I hope that through my blog posts, you will be encouraged to accept and make the best of challenges God throws at your life. Categories
