While browsing Pinterest a couple weeks ago, I came across this knitted rug: So, I don't knit. I tried once to teach myself, and I ended up with a tangled knot on both sticks and an uneven trail of sort-of knitted yarn. So I stick to crochet. I really liked the colors and the pattern of this rug, so I thought I could make up a crochet pattern for it. I started off with the middle five triangles: Made the next five triangles: So now it will look like this: And then finished with the last five triangles: So now it will look like this: Yes, there was measuring and getting frustrated because it didn't look like the original and more measuring and getting frustrated because the pieces didn't all line up perfectly. Finally I just joined all the pieces together with a big plastic needle and a length of yarn: But the whole thing was rather small (it fit on my lap) and actually, it didn't really feel like rug material. So I decided to turn it into a blanket. I had a big ball of maroon, and big ball of gray, and a REALLY big ball of cream. The only problem was trying to figure out how to put a border on a shape that had points sticking out all over the place. I really made it up as I went, doing two crochets in one hole sometimes to go around an obtuse corner and skipping other holes where the corner went in an acute angle. I honestly don't know how I got so many rows of maroon on one half of the blanket: Six on one half of the blanket and 14 on the other half. I have no idea. Anyway, with that and with all my going around corners, the blanket turned out a little lopsided and wrinkly: Notice that row in the cream that sort of breaks up the pattern? Yeah, I made that up too. :-) I did a row of chaining three (a common edging) and then I chained four on top of that which made it very loopy, and then to make it flat (so I could do more double crochets--the boring stitch) I chained two. I think that is so pretty. This blanket is a far cry from my inspiration, but I kinda like the fact that it wraps around my legs. With a square afghan, there's always little gaps that let in a draft, but with this cup-like blanket, no draft!

Who am I, you ask?
In 2006 I had a stroke, and every day my husband encourages me to use my remaining brain cells to the best of my ability. I love to organize, make crafts, and go on adventures (safe ones). I hope that through my blog posts, you will be encouraged to accept and make the best of challenges God throws at your life. Categories
