Every night, EJ gets a verse to memorize, and we stay on that verse for about 4 days. I wanted to pray for specific people every night, and I also wanted to pray for missionaries we knew. So I made prayer sticks.
Last year (yes, it really has been that long) I did a project to help us pray for people during our evening family devotions. As he was growing up, my husband and his siblings learned a verse every week, then his dad would pull out a new missionary every night that the entire family would pray for. We always had a Bible lesson and just prayed (prayer for missionaries happened at meal time). For our new little family (once EJ was old enough to actively participate) we made our own routine. Every night, EJ gets a verse to memorize, and we stay on that verse for about 4 days. I wanted to pray for specific people every night, and I also wanted to pray for missionaries we knew. So I made prayer sticks. I found old wedding photos of our families and cut out everyone's face. I got popsicle sticks and wrote each name on one, then glued the picture to one end. I didn't have photos of everyone, so some sticks only have names. My husband and I discussed it, and we thought of about 6 missionaries that I wrote each person's name on their own stick. I wanted to make sure we prayed for one missionary every night, so I made two jars. The family jar is on the right, and the missionary jar is on the left. We have way more family members than missionaries, so we take turns--one night, my husband will pray for the missionary, and EJ and I will pray for a family member. The next night, I will pray for the missionary, and the next night EJ will. In order to keep track of who we pray for, I made two more jars--the "prayed for" jars. And of course to keep track of which jar was which: When we pray for all the people in the first jar, we move the "prayed for" stick and start over. Having so many different people to pray for, and we never know who we're going to draw, I have a notebook that I wrote everyone's name down with their specific prayer request(s). As they are answered, I mark them out and rewrite them. Isn't this a cute little notebook? You can see I've already used up three pages of answered prayer requests! How cute that there are different colors! I love this little notebook. (EJ says it was thoughtful of them to put different colors for me.) I did find this idea on pinterest, and if you want other people's pictures and explanations, you can search "prayer sticks". But seriously, no one can explain it better than me, right? ;-)

We certainly appreciate having specific prayer offered for us when our names are drawn. This is so much more effective for everyone involved than "pray for all our family members" and "pray for all the missionaries"!! Thank you for helping him to focus on individuals in need to God's help!

Who am I, you ask?
In 2006 I had a stroke, and every day my husband encourages me to use my remaining brain cells to the best of my ability. I love to organize, make crafts, and go on adventures (safe ones). I hope that through my blog posts, you will be encouraged to accept and make the best of challenges God throws at your life. Categories
