I was going to call my mom to see if she could look up a cheese ball recipe online, but then another friend called and I told her what I was making and she gave me her cheese ball recipe off the top of her head. She said she makes them with cream cheese mixed with cheddar cheese. Cool, that's easy. So I went to the store:
I found a cute thanksgiving-themed food a couple weeks ago and have been waiting for the perfect time to make it. Then our church had a fellowship and I was asked to bring something. So I decided to make these turkey cheese balls. I got the idea from here. Her turkey was made out of a bent piece of slim jim, a spaghetti noodle soaked in red food coloring, and yellow food coloring-dyed eyes. I didn't have any of that, but I decided not to worry about what I would make the head out of until I got to that point. I also didn't have a clue how to make a cheese ball, and there is not a recipe for it on that lady's blog. All I did have were the feathers: Okay, that turned out blurry! I would retake the picture, but that would require me to get up, go upstairs (and let some cold air downstairs), pose and take the picture, then come back down (and let in more cold air) and transfer the ONE picture off my camera. I'm not that sorry it's blurry. If it makes your eyes water, just scroll down so you can't see it anymore. I was going to call my mom to see if she could look up a cheese ball recipe online, but then another friend called and I told her what I was making and she gave me her cheese ball recipe off the top of her head. She said she makes them with cream cheese mixed with cheddar cheese. Cool, that's easy. So I went to the store: I thought after I got home that maybe it was too easy, so I looked online for another recipe. The one I found said to add a powdered ranch dressing packet and bacon bits. I don't have bacon bits, but I did have: (Yes, I took the pictures after the fact.) I was going to mix one package of cream cheese mix at a time, but when I tasted it (something I learned from Hell's Kitchen--always taste your food before serving it!) the ranch flavor was SO incredibly powerful it about knocked me to the floor! So I added the other package of cheese and it wasn't so bad anymore. But it was really difficult to stir in my small bowl! The mixture turned out like this: Not very pretty, but it shaped into balls nicely. So now I was faced with a dilemma--what to do about the turkeys' faces? I had 6 small balls (because my feathers were really short, I thought one big ball with tiny feathers would look funny). I wandered around my craft room for a few minutes, searching for inspiration. I saw all the items from my countdown calendar still on my ironing board, and after running my hands over everything, trying to conjour up in my mind what they could make, I figured it out. I cut, glued, and markered six little heads and pressed them onto the cheese bodies. I think they turned out quite well. Half a popsicle stick, a slice of felt (held on with the help of Elmer), and two drops of marker. Definitely not professional-looking, but judging from the fact that I took 6 and brought home 2 1/2, I don't think anyone minded too badly. I did make one mistake, however, and I'll let you in on a secret I learned from it. Don't stick supposed-to-be crunchy items into a soft wet blob 6 hours ahead of time. The tips turn gooey. But at least now I know for next time. :-)
